Chapter Nine

"Oh, Samuel." Pippa sat in the parlor, her faithful dog resting his head on her lap. "What are we to do? I have made such a terrible mess of things."

She and Hugh had returned late in the night and agreed not to reveal their marriage to their families at once. Hugh said if they waited a few weeks, they could lie about the exact date of their marriage and claim they'd been wed far longer than they had. thus insuring the baby's birth would not trigger unwanted gossip. Pippa was grateful for his thoughtfulness and relieved at not having to immediately assume all the duties of his wife. She knew as surely as she'd ever known anything in her life, marrying Hugh was a horrible mistake. But she'd had little choice.

She barely slept at all and when she did she dreamed. Dreams that left her gasping with a need beyond words, only to awake to an emptiness she could scarcely face. Her mind and her body were exhausted. Still, the joy she'd known at the knowledge of her condition lingered deep in a secret part of her heart. This child was Spencer's and no one could ever convince her it had not been conceived in love.

She rubbed behind Samuel's ears and he looked up at her with adoration. She smiled back. "You are my one true love, aren't you, Samuel?"

But Hugh was now her husband and she could not ignore his feelings about the dog. Samuel would have to go. Tears filled her eyes. She rested her head on his back. "Oh, Samuel. Samuel, what shall we do?"

"I should think a wedding first will do nicely."

Pippa jerked upright and stared in silent shock.

A smiling Spencer strode toward her from the doorway. Samuel leapt off the settee and lunged for the man. jumping and gamboling about him in spasms of doggy delight. Spencer laughed and patted the beast.

"I daresay it's good to know someone is pleased to see me. Down, Samuel." He bent to pat the dog then straightened. "Pippa? Is something the matter?"

"I am surprised to see you." Slowly, she rose to her feet. He cast her his lopsided grin and her heart stopped. "Where have you been?"

"I told you I needed to go to town." He took her hands. "I have procured a special license. We can be married at once."

"Married," she said softly.

He wrapped his arms around her. "Isn't that what you want? What we both want?"

"Oh yes." Joy surged through her. It was all a mistake, then. A ghastly mistake. Awe colored her words. "You do love me."

"Of course I love you." He brushed his lips across hers. "I will love you always."

"And I will thank you to unhand my wife." Hugh stood in the doorway.

Spencer's eyes widened. He looked from Pippa to Hugh and Back. "Your wife?"

Hugh sauntered into the parlor, pausing by the table bearing the brandy. "We were married yesterday."

"Yesterday?" Spencer shook his head. "I don't believe you."

Hugh poured a glass. "Ask my wife then.
